K-Gr 4–A wide range of topics from brain basics to mindfulness to breathing are presented in this book whose ultimate goal is to present children with “lots of ways to help you cope with life’s ups and downs.” The first half of the book covers basic brain anatomy and function, as well as detailed breathing techniques for children to use when they are anxious or afraid. The second half covers broad topics such as Practice, Perseverance, Resilience, Outlook, Gratitude, and Compassion, with quotes from notable people such as Michael Jordan (Practice), Malala Yousafzai (Resilience), and Mahatma Gandhi (Compassion). At 60 pages and 14 subheadings, there is far more information than can be shared in one sitting. Language is largely in easy-to-understand terminology; at times it is unnecessarily childish: “Your brain is really, really soft, and really, really important.” Bold color highlights for random words ranging from “warm” to “neuroplasticity” are used with no discernible reason or explanation. Charming illustrations are included on each page; the multiracial children depicted read younger than the text would indicate, which may put off older children.
VERDICT This book might best fit in a parenting collection or be used by a school counselor seeking to help a child deal with anxiety—otherwise, an additional purchase.
