PreS-Gr 1–In this charming nod to perennial favorite Harold and the Purple Crayon, bespectacled main character Leo is faced with “another gray, dusty day in the scrapyard” with Mom and Mama. Bored with doodling in his coloring book, Leo takes out his favorite pink marker and goes to work on coloring everything around him pink. The book joyously follows him as he colors a mailbox, a cat, and even a magnet crane. When Mom and Mama finally catch on to what he is doing, the ending won’t be what readers expect. As Leo’s day progresses, pages turn from dark to light, mimicking the happiness he feels along with readers.
VERDICT A wonderful book that showcases what the imagination can do, and to shelve right next to Crockett Johnson’s original.
