PreS-Gr 1–Meet the Gnumans, a family of gnus with an adopted zebra offspring. They have just moved to Kindness County, a place full of thoughtful and generous animal friends. In this search-and-find book, Berger explores the theme of kindness on the Gnumans’ moving day. Emphasis is placed on how stressful and exhausting moving can be; but with the help of some friends, everything comes together. There is a lot to read and examine on each page, with an art style reminiscent of Richard Scarry’s work. The tone is semi-educational but the whimsical, inviting illustrations lighten the messaging. Adding to the fun are the alliterative names for the characters, e.g., Otto the Sharing Otter, Goolash the Gift-Giving Ghost, and Dot the Donation Dalmation. Berger provides countless examples of how to be kind in different scenarios and settings, from Kindness Corners Market to Kindercise Gym. The book concludes with different renditions of kindness and encourages readers to “find all the kind” in their everyday lives.
VERDICT Where books on kindness are in short supply, this is safe purchase.
