Screen from The Game of Life (Marmalade Games)
Fans of Hasbro's The Game of Life will enjoy an opportunity to play this American classic on the go—minus the need for a box of small parts. The app (iOS, Android, both $2.99, Marmalade Game Studio; Gr 4 Up) is graphically rich, featuring bright colors, sharp images, and flashing lights. Players may choose the "full" mode option where the game is played to its end or the "fast" mode where a specific game criterion is met. Either way the game moves quickly to the sound of jaunty tunes. Children can play locally against the computer or friends, or with an online opponent. Up to four players--human or computer—may sign on to a local game. While there is an element of strategy to the game, it involves making decisions that impact the appster's own income/expenses (wealthiest player wins). Life may suggest something to children about adult choices and decisions, but there are no serious consequences for poor choices here. On the downside, however, a few replay scenes can get tedious (marriage, having children). To note: 10 additional themed boards can be purchased, but are not necessary to enjoy the game. VERDICT A classic family board game receives a winning digital update.—Wayne Cherry, Jr., St. Pius X High School, Houston, TXFor additional app reviews, visit School Library Journal's dedicated app webpage.

Loved this game, on mobile it lacks being able to really spin the wheel of chance, that noise alone brings back memories :)Posted : Sep 03, 2017 07:17
