Many librarians are familiar with the swell of excitement that passes over a young reader when they realize the book they just devoured is part of an ongoing series. They have seen the careful consideration of a parent or colleague trying to navigate books that might aid in reading instruction. Keeping up with series fiction, from the first volume to the 47th, can be difficult. And finding reviews for them is even harder. The first edition of Fiction Series Made Simple is designed to help professionals navigate the landscape of decodable ­readers; hi-lo fiction; and graphic novel sequels; as well as picture book, ­transitional, and middle grade series.

A team of experienced reviewers lent their expertise to the evaluation of a diverse collection of titles, series, and sets. Middle grade fantasy, engaging chapter books, and picture book series teaching SEL skills are all covered in this issue. Books about familiar characters, such as Shannon Hale’s “Princess in Black” and the crew from Disney’s Inside Out share space with potential new friends, and the robust decodables section will help librarians who are building collections that support science of reading curriculums. Keeping series fiction in the hands of young patrons as they build habits and discover a love of reading is a priority, and we hope these reviews help librarians keep their shelves fresh and fun.
