I'm not sure why I resisted tuning in to the Australian "Miss Fisher" period mystery series—period being 1920s Melbourne—but I eventually gave in and was instantly hooked. Now Tin Man Games, the developer of "Ryan North's To Be or Not To Be" and other apps, captures the unflappable amateur detective's adventures on digital. Andrea Lipinski reviews it below. Miss Fisher and the Deathly Maze (Tin Man Games, iOS, Android; free to download, with IAPs; Gr 7 Up), an interactive game based on the Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, features several of the television show’s major characters in the 1920s Australia setting. As usual, Miss Phryne Fisher finds herself at the center of several suspicious deaths, and must use her investigative skills to deduce what happened. Also, typically, she calls upon Jack Robinson (her favorite local detective inspector) to help solve the case. There is no voice acting in the game (the dialogue is all written text), but the musical score from the TV series is used throughout, with additional sound effects. Slight animations are also in evidence. Fans of the show will have two important questions about this game: Does the glamorous Phryne have an equally fashionable wardrobe as the one in the show, and, is her relationship with Jack as flirtatious? The answers: yes and yes. Much of the game consists of players watching the story unravel, but there are several ways in which they can interact with it to make things happen—in both small and significant ways. By questioning suspects, players will collect clues that can later be explored using the “deduce” feature to get to the truth. By examining everything in each setting, viewers will discover more of Phryne’s outfits, which she will be able to don later. There are also several short hidden-object games, which players can complete, or skip, if they’d prefer. This game is clearly designed for people who have already watched the TV show (if they haven't, it's definitely binge-worthy—especially for its twisted mysteries, unique settings, and romantic entanglements). With at least the first season of the show under their belts, viewers will have extra incentive to root for these characters. VERDICT An engaging game that will intrigue mystery buffs and entertain fans of the "Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries" series.—Andrea Lipinski, New York Public Library
