Florida legislation is discussing an effort to curb the large number of book challenges. But it's not all good news in the Sunshine State. The state just rejected all suggested books for a monthly story time program from a civil rights museum, including stories of Tuskegee Airmen and on voting rights.

The Florida House is discussing a bill designed to discourage parents from going overboard on challenging books in school libraries. If enacted, the bill would impose $100 fees on any parent or resident who wants to submit challenges to more than five books or who submits an objection to a book and doesn’t have a child enrolled in the school where the book is located, according to Politico.

Florida’s Department of State tossed out the entire slate of books recommended by the civil rights Grove Museum for the first six months of its 2024 monthly story time program for young children, including books on voting rights and Black history. The books were deemed not appropriate for the time of year they were being offered, not age-appropriate, or not on the state Department of Education’s preapproved reading list.

A bill in the New Mexico state legislature proposes preventing public libraries from banning books based on political or religious views from what one of the bill’s sponsors calls “hate groups.” HB 123 would prevent public libraries from receiving funding if they do not adopt and comply with the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, which includes a requirement that library materials not be removed based on “partisan or doctrinal disapproval” based on the author’s race, nationality, gender identity, sexual orientation or political or religious views, the bill states.
