The "Dog Man" and "Captain Underpants" author, country music icon, and Reading Rainbow legend start initiatives this week to help students, parents, and educators.
Authors and celebrities continue to try to help students, parents, and educators during the coronavirus pandemic that has closed schools and put stay-at-home orders in place across the country. This week, Dav Pilkey, Dolly Parton, and LeVar Burton begin their initiatives.
Dav Pilkey at Home, a collaboration between the “Dog Man” and “Captain Underpants” author and the Library of Congress (LOC), launches today with free activities, including how-to-draw demonstrations, read-alouds, and resources from the LOC’s collections. On Fridays at 8 a.m. EDT, new video content created by Pilkey will be released. More videos and content, including downloadable activities, discussions about books, and tips to create characters or act out scenes from the “Dog Man” series will be added periodically throughout the week.
Dav Pilkey at Home can be found on Twitter (@LibraryCongress and @scholastic), Facebook (facebook.com/libraryofcongress and facebook.com/scholastic), the Library of Congress website (loc.gov/engage), and on the Dav Pilkey at Home and Learn at Home pages on the Scholastic site (scholastic.com/davpilkeyathome and scholastic.com/learnathome).
On Thursday night, Parton begins “Goodnight with Dolly.” The legendary country singer founded Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a program that sends books to kids from birth until they start school, in 1990. Now she will be tapping those titles for a weekly read-aloud video series on Thursdays at 7 p.m.
“Hello, I’m Dolly Parton, the book lady from the Imagination Library,” Parton said in the video announcing the series of storytimes that will be found on the Imagination Library’s social media channels on Twitter, on Instagram, and Facebook.
On Friday, Reading Rainbow fans can return to their youth as Burton begins "LeVar Burton Reads," a Twitter livestream of read-alouds that he will do three times a week, divided by age group. Mondays at noon EDT, he will read for children; Wednesdays at 6 EDT will be YA; and starting April 3, Fridays at 9 p.m. EDT will be for adults.

Can anyone tell me why these amazing events are only on Social Media? I can't send kids to Facebook or Twitter! They have an age restriction, don't they???

Please consider finding a qualified ASL interpreter to interpret your stories! Deaf children would love that!
