In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, many schools and libraries in the United States are looking for high-quality books in Spanish to share with students and their families. But as the population of Spanish-speaking people in the U.S. continues to grow, there is increasing demand among schools and libraries for Spanish-language content year-round.

As of July 1, 2022, there were 63.7 million people who identify as Hispanic living in the U.S., the Census Bureau reports, making it the nation’s largest racial or ethnic minority—representing 19 percent of the total population. Thirteen U.S. states had at least one million Hispanic residents in 2022: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington.

A range of factors are spurring U.S. schools and libraries to expand their Spanish-language offerings.

Schools with dual-language programs need high-quality content for children to read and write in both English and Spanish. In households where Spanish is the primary language, offering Spanish-language books gives children content they can read with their families. What’s more, books from Spanish-language authors and regions allow students from these cultures to see themselves represented in the books they read, which is critical for them to develop both a love of reading and pride in their identity.

“We’re seeing more representation in school libraries not just from Mexico but from other Spanish-speaking countries,” says Miguel Briones, a teacher, author, and founder of Know Culture Publishing. “I think it’s really important that, as publishers, we keep elevating these kinds of stories.”

As Susan Dobinick, assistant publisher at Astra Books for Young Readers, notes, “This market is here, it’s growing—and it’s important to give schools and families what they’re looking for.”

Here are some of the top Spanish-language titles for the U.S. market this fall.

Lectorum Publications

Lectorum began in 1960 as a trade bookstore, catering to the needs of the general public and college students in the New York metropolitan area. The company soon became a nationwide distribution center for Spanish-language titles, serving public schools, libraries, universities, and bookstores. Since then, it has grown to become the largest distributor of Spanish-language books in the country, with more than 25,000 titles from over 500 publishers. It also publishes its own books, mostly Spanish translations of books from popular English-language authors such as Dr. Seuss and Shel Silverstein.

“We curate books for children up to age 14,” says President and CEO Alex Correa. “We are a major vendor for the New York City Department of Education and other school systems.”

Seré la luna: Una historia de inmigración (I’ll Be the Moon: A Migrant Child’s Story) by Phillip D. Cortez, illustrated by Mafs Rodríguez Alpide, January 2024, ISBN 9781685554774, is a heartwarming immigration tale about a young girl’s courage and the distance she travels to be with a family member. In her journey north to the United States with her mother, the girl is shepherded by the moon as she aims to reunite with her father across the border. With vivid words and imaginative illustrations, the book shows how la luna brings light to the darkness and guides us to those we love.

“Cortez’s simple but rich telling of a child’s view of crossing the desert brilliantly engages all of the senses as you follow the desert path with the moon as a guide,” says Rebecca Calderon, coordinator of library services and innovative learning for Texas’ Ysleta Independent School District.

The English-language version of the book was published in October 2023, and the Spanish-language version was released three months later. “I felt strongly that we couldn’t publish an English-language version without also publishing in Spanish,” Engel says.

La mosca que voló al espacio (The Fly Who Flew to Space) by Lauren Sánchez, illustrated by Raleigh Stewart, September 2024, ISBN 9781685557676, is about a bold and inquisitive fly named Flynn who daydreams of becoming an astronaut.

School is hard, but especially when there’s an attention-grabbing rocket company just down the road. (Flynn lives in Houston, within earshot of the NASA Space Center.) One day while exploring, Flynn flies aboard a rocket ship that suddenly takes off. Readers follow Flynn on an exciting journey to space to learn more about our precious planet—from amazing natural wonders like the rainforest to the atmosphere that protects it all.

With a book jacket that doubles as a glow-in-the-dark poster and an interior page that also glows, this engaging picture book features exquisitely detailed illustrations by Clio-award winner Stewart. It introduces children to important STEAM concepts while also celebrating qualities such curiosity, discovery, and risk-taking.

The author, Sánchez, is an Emmy Award-winning journalist. Growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, she looked to her father, a former flight instructor, and dreamed of one day becoming a pilot. After a distinguished career in journalism, Sánchez finally got her pilot’s license in her 40s, which ultimately led her to found her own aviation company in 2016—proving you’re never too old to chase your dreams, Engel says.

Sánchez’s experience as a mother, coupled with her love of storytelling and adventure, motivated her to write her first children’s book—and she hopes this book inspires kids everywhere to chase their dreams. As a Latina pilot, she also hopes to inspire young girls to pursue STEAM careers.

Chesapeake Press launched in 2021 with the goal of engaging the next generation in our democratic process. The company’s books, podcast, blog, and curriculum materials are designed to introduce civics education to readers in grades K–8. Chesapeake Press has developed curriculum materials to help teachers integrate each of its titles into instruction.

“We’re saving American democracy, one kid at a time,” says founder Marie Daley, the publishing name of writer Kitty Felde. Felde is an award-winning public radio journalist, writer, and TEDx speaker.

The first few books the company published are Felde’s middle-grade mystery series, “The Fina Mendoza Mysteries,” described as The West Wing meets Nancy Drew. Available in both English and Spanish, the books follow the adventures of the 10-year-old daughter of a California congressman who solves mysteries inside the U.S. Capitol with the help of her dog, Senator Something. The award-winning series, which gives students a behind-the-scenes look at how government works (and doesn’t work), has been praised by members of Congress on both sides of the political aisle.

In Bienvenida a Washington Fina Mendoza (Welcome to Washington Fina Mendoza), July 2023, ISBN 9781737097860, legend has it that anyone who sees the Demon Cat of Capitol Hill will be cursed with bad luck—and Fina just saw it. In Estado de la unión: Los misterios de Fina Mendoza (State of the Union: A Fina Mendoza Mystery), August 2024, ISBN 9781737097877, a mysterious bird poops on the president’s head during the State of the Union address. Losing is Democratic: How to Talk to Kids About January 6th, January 2024, ISBN 9798989493449, is a short Fina Mendoza novella with an important message. As Fina watches the mob break into the Capitol on TV, she wonders: Is her papa okay? Most of Fina’s classmates have parents who work inside the building as well. Their teacher calms their fears and turns the event into a teaching opportunity as students discuss the importance of both winning and losing, whether it’s a baseball game, a reading competition, or an election. The publisher is in the process of creating a Spanish-language translation of this book.

Lerner Publishing Group

Minneapolis-based Lerner Publishing Group is one of the nation’s largest independent children’s book publishers, with 14 imprints. The company publishes about 50 Spanish-language titles per year, with an active—and growing—list of 400 Spanish titles altogether.

“We’re committed to publishing books in Spanish for kids to be able to read and learn in Spanish and see themselves in the books they read,” says Executive Vice President and Editor-in-Chief Andy Cummings. “We want to give students a lot of options to choose from.”

Pieza a pieza (Piece by Piece) by Lupe Ruiz-Flores, illustrated by Anna López Real, August 2024, ISBN 9798765644034, is a narrative nonfiction picture book for children ages 5–9. It tells the true story of a young Mexican American girl with an affinity for woodworking. During the Great Depression, her family had to rely on food aid from the federal government. Because she had been raised to express gratitude, she used the wooden crates the food was shipped in to create a year-long woodworking project that she sent to President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a token of her appreciation, and her project still resides in the Roosevelt Library.

“Bo en The Buzz” (“Bo at The Buzz”) by Elliott Smith, illustrated by Subi Bosa, August 2024, is a series of six early chapter books for students in grades 1–3 about a boy named Bo who lives above his pop-pop’s barbershop, The Buzz. In Bo y el juego de baloncesto (Bo and the Basketball Game), ISBN 9798765623916, Bo wants to be the star of his basketball team, but he can’t make a shot—and he must find another way to help his team win their first game. Six new Spanish-language titles are coming out in August 2024, including G.O.A.T. en la gimnasia (Gymnastics’ G.O.A.T.) by Joe Levit, ISBN 9798765623992, which students may find interesting in the wake of the Summer Olympics. The other new titles focus on boxing, track and field, tennis, golf, and professional wrestling.

Familius

Fresno, California-based Familius was founded in 2012 with a simple mission: to help families be happy. Each of the 60 or so books that Familius publishes each year aligns with the “Ten Habits of Happy Family Life” that the company has identified, says Sales and Marketing Director Ashley Mireles-Guerrero: love, play, learn, work, talk, heal, read, eat, give, and laugh together.

Recognizing a need for Spanish-language content among multigenerational, multilingual families, Familius began publishing books in Spanish around 2018. Among its first Spanish-language offerings was Proud to Be Latino: Food/Comida by Ashley Marie Mireles, illustrated by Edith Valle, September 2019, ISBN 9781641701549. This bilingual board book teaches children ages 3–5 how different Latin American countries use similar ingredients to create unique regional dishes. The dishes and their descriptions are given in both English and Spanish, with the Spanish text appearing on the left-hand page and the English text appearing on the right.

One of Familius’s best-selling picture books is Made for Me, a poem that Miami jazz club owner Zach Bush wrote in honor of his first child. The English-language version was published in April 2021, and one month later Familius released a Spanish-language version: Naciste para mi by Zach Bush, illustrated by Gregorio de Lauretis, May 2021, ISBN 9781641704854. Mireles-Guerrero describes it as “a very emotional book” that resonates with fathers in particular.

In November 2024, Familius will simultaneously release English and Spanish versions of a picture book about Three Kings Day—a Latin American celebration of the Magi’s welcoming of the baby Jesus on January 6. ¡Genial, Llegó el Día de Reyes! (Hooray, It’s Three Kings Day!) by Annette M. Clayton, illustrated by Jone Leal, ISBN 9781641708715, tells the story of a young girl named Sofia, whose grandmother arrives from Puerto Rico to live with her. Sofia’s abuela teaches her all about Three Kings Day and its traditions, including leaving shoes under her bed for the Magi to deliver presents.

For children ages 5–7, the book includes four pages of back matter with traditional recipes, a Spanish glossary, and details about how this holiday is celebrated in different countries around the world.

MakeMake

Based in Bogotá, Colombia, MakeMake is a subscription-based digital library of Spanish-language content for schools and libraries. It includes unlimited, simultaneous access to carefully selected books in Spanish for kids ages 3–14 from more than 70 of the best Latin American publishers, as well reading guides for educators and live events with Latin American authors.

The school version of the service integrates with Google Classroom and other popular learning management systems, as well as single sign-on services such as Clever and ClassLink—allowing teachers to import class rosters, assign specific books to students, create book clubs, and track students’ reading activity. Wisconsin’s Madison Metropolitan School District is among the school systems using the platform to expand students’ access to Spanish-language content. Public library customers in the United States include Los Angeles and Austin, Texas.

The platform offers a wide variety of content for students, including interactive books with read-along features and animations, as well as graphic novels, picture books, chapter books, short stories, and poetry. Its simple and intuitive interface allows users to search for books by topic, genre, or reading level.

In February 2024, MakeMake received the 2024 Bologna Ragazzi CrossMedia Award for the Best Digital Reading Experience given by the Bologna Book Fair in Italy, one of the world’s premier book fairs.

This fall, MakeMake will launch a comprehensive literacy instruction system in Spanish for students in grades K–5. Created in partnership with Tatami Learning, an Argentinian company, the system will include specialized reading software and precise metrics for measuring success; carefully chosen age-appropriate authentic Latin American eBooks; and teaching guides to help educators integrate the books into their reading programs, transforming students into confident readers and writers in Spanish.

The first sets of materials, aimed at students in grades 1–3, will be available this fall as a free demo for selected schools. The full launch of the product for grades K–5 is scheduled for February 2025.

“We’re giving teachers the tools they need to make the most of these books for instruction,” says MakeMake Founder Catalina Holguín. “We have done the legwork of finding publishers and preselecting high-quality content.”

Know Culture Publishing

Know Culture Publishing was founded in 2021 by Miguel Briones, an ESL EC-6 Certified educator, award-winning author, and community advocate. All the company’s books are bilingual, with the Spanish-language text appearing first and the English translation second.

“Our mission is to foster a holistic, equitable, and compassionate approach to teaching literacy,” Briones says. “We aim to empower students, families, and school district staff by improving literacy and writing through the creation of culturally relevant bilingual books, bilingual author visits, speaking engagements, and youth writing workshops.”

Como Mi Padrino (Like My Godfather) by Miguel A. Briones, ISBN 9780578288697, won an honorable mention from the International Latino Book Awards when it first published in 2023, and it’s being reprinted in December 2024. It’s the story of Miguelito, a young Chicano traversing a world of peer pressure, fear, anxiety, and anger as he grows up in a tough El Paso, Texas neighborhood. But the dark cloud lifts when Miguelito discovers his purpose after he’s introduced to a family member he’s never met before—and he finds true acceptance for the first time. The story is based on Briones’ own life experience, “intertwined with some of the struggles I saw in my own students’ lives,” he says.

Macho No Machismo (Macho Not Machismo) by Miguel A. Briones, illustrated by Isa Medina, September 2023, ISBN 9798990270718, aims to help younger readers understand the difference between someone who is “macho,” or strong and manly, and someone who exhibits “machismo,” a toxic, sexist, and bullying form of masculinity. As Briones explains it: “There is nothing wrong with being a macho. A macho is kind, caring, and a good steward. Machismos are the exact opposite.” The book can help spark important conversations about identity and destructive behaviors, and two follow-up books on this topic will be published in 2025.

Caló by Chris “Drts” Aragón and Miguel A. Briones, March 2025, ISBN 9798990270732, seeks to preserve the dialect of Caló, which originated in the neighborhoods of El Paso’s sister city, Juarez, Mexico. Through culturally meaningful art, Aragón—a talented graffiti and tattoo artist—brings to life this dialect, which unfortunately has been associated with Mexican American criminals. The book also provides examples of how to use the words in the context of a sentence.
