Gr 2-5–Batgirl and Supergirl face familiar supervillains and old colleagues from the DC Comics Universe in these fast-paced adventure chapter books. Harley Quinn hurtles through time with the girls when they find a kaleidoscope that transports them to different eras and places; Zod breaks free and attempts to take over Earth; the Cheetah steals an ancient necklace from a museum that gives its wearer unprecedented power; and the Joker installs a hypnosis app on people’s phones, causing them to laugh helplessly at everything while he and his goons rob, steal, and cultivate chaos. Bright full-color illustrations break up the action-packed, exciting chapters, and short, level-appropriate sentences make these a great addition to early chapter book collections. ea vol: illus. by Alice Larsson. 32p. (Math All Around). North Star. Jul. 2024. pap. $7.99.
K-Gr 2–In the most recent additions to the this series, young readers are introduced to foundational math concepts, which are presented in the context of everyday experience. In one book, Adrian explores shapes with his grandma in the kitchen, searching the cupboards and the fridge for real-life examples of shapes he’s learning about. In another book, a girl is frustrated with her cat, Muffin, for being unable to tell time and sets out to teach her how the big and little hands on a clock-face work. These short, simple tales are suitable for both beginning readers and pre-readers interested in stories about math concepts. VERDICT While the storytelling is a little bit clunky, math-themed books for young readers are uncommon, making this series a good choice for collections in need of more STEM-themed beginning reader titles.

K-Gr 2–In this new, full-color beginning chapter book series, Milo Gray takes readers along with him and his imaginary best friends (a stuffed elephant and a stuffed giraffe) on new adventures in each story. In these first four titles, they explore space, go on a safari in search of wild animals, complete a series of super spy challenges, and explore a mysterious tomb in search of treasure—all in Milo’s imagination, of course! Frequent reality checks in the form of neighbors and family members ground the story in real life. Milo’s adventures are easily accessible to young readers, with four chapters and well-spaced, short paragraphs. Filieri’s engaging illustrations will delight young readers, who will enjoy seeing the contrast of Milo’s actual location with his imaginary one. ea vol: illus. by Alejandra Barajas. 32p. (Bo Keeps the Beat). Capstone/Picture Window. Jul. 2024. Tr $16.99.
Gr 1-3–In this new own-voices series, second grader Bo is passionate about making music and learning how to play instruments. Bo, like the author Bambridge, has achondroplasia, a condition that makes some of his bones shorter than those of other kids. While this sometimes presents challenges, like when his feet can’t reach the piano pedals, or his arms aren’t long enough to reach the length of a clarinet, Bo finds creative ways to adapt. This gentle, relatable series also explores common friendship and classroom situations that many kids will relate to. Full-color illustrations punctuate the three chapters of each book, and well-spaced and well-sized paragraphs make these stories accessible to newly independent readers. A glossary, discussion questions, further information about achondroplasia, and other topics, like musical instruments, are appended in each volume. VERDICT Recommended for purchase in all early chapter book collections, especially those in need of disability representation.
Bardhan-Quallen, Sudipta. Princess Bea’s Pony Parade. illus. by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen. 80p. (Princess Power: Bk. 2). Abrams. Jul. 2024. pap. $7.99. ISBN 9781419772030.
Gr 1-3–Based on the popular Netflix TV series and inspired by the Princesses Wear Pants picture books, this second installment of the chapter book series focuses on Princess Bea, of the Blueberry Fruitdom. On the day of the annual Horse and Harvest Hullabaloo, Bea’s fathers, King Barton and Sir Benedict, wake up with the flu. Instead of canceling the beloved tradition, Bea decides that she will ride Bernie, the royal stallion, in her fathers’ place. Even though she is somewhat frightened of the large horse and doesn’t have a lot of experience riding, Bea prides herself on being sporty and adventurous and is determined to find a way. Princess Power to the rescue! Bea calls on her friends (using her magical charm bracelet) and they work together to come up with a solution. While the concept of powerful princesses is no longer novel, this series will delight young fans of the show and those looking for diverse representation in their princess stories. VERDICT Recommended as a secondary purchase where princess stories are in demand.
Bass, Guy. The Beast of Grubbers Nubbin. illus. by Pete Williamson. 192p. (Stitch Head). Tiger Tales. Aug. 2024. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9781664340794.
Gr 3-5–In the town of Grubbers Nubbin, a new beast has emerged, and it’s up to Stitch Head to stop it. Recently, Stitch Head rescued a large group of orphans from an “evil spider-lady who fed on their souls” and has taken them under his care. However, his friend Arabella believes that the castle where they reside—owned by a professor who creates monsters—is no place for humans. Despite this, Stitch Head is determined to keep his promise to protect them. While stealing food for the orphans in town, he encounters the monstrous beast. Upon discovering that a human from the castle used his master’s “beast yeast” potion to transform into the creature, Stitch Head must find a cure. The story’s morbid, horrorlike illustrations complement its dark tone. VERDICT A strong addition to children’s horror collections, especially where the “Stitch Head” series is already popular.
Baum, L. Frank. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. adapted by Gemma Barder. illus. by Archina Laezza. 120p. (Children’s Easy Classics Collection). Sweet Cherry. Sept. 2024. pap. $7.95. ISBN 9781802634785.
Gr 2-5–Young readers are introduced to a classic fantasy adventure story with the help of friendly art and simplified story lines. Young Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas with her aunt, uncle, and beloved little dog, Toto. When a sudden tornado strikes, Dorothy is trapped in the house as it whirls around and comes to land in a lush, magical landscape. Suddenly, Dorothy is surrounded by Munchkins and a kind witch who informs her that she has killed the Wicked Witch of the East when her house landed on top of her. Frightened, Dorothy wishes to go home, but learns that she must travel to the Emerald City to see the Great Wizard of Oz in order to get back. Along the way, Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Lion, and together they overcome hardships. While this engaging story holds undeniable appeal for children, this edition does little to convey its charm. Readers hardly get to know the main characters as they move through the various plot points and may find that they want a more detailed account of Dorothy and her friends, especially if they are already familiar with the classic film adaptation. VERDICT Purchase where classics for young readers are in high demand.

This time, they enter their adorable dog Luna into a canine contest after teaching her some new tricks, and they host a party for their Great Uncle Cha, featuring some especially sticky noodles. The family’s lively activities are brought to life through vibrant illustrations. The inclusion of Hmong words and their pronunciations before the first chapter aids in reading, while the Hmong facts and glossary at the end offer an informative introduction to the culture for children who may be unfamiliar with it. VERDICT These titles uphold the quality of the series, prominently highlighting Hmong culture, and are valuable additions to library collections.

ea vol: illus. by Aaron Blabey. 192p. (The Bad Guys). Scholastic. pap. $6.99.
Gr 2-5–The final two installments of this beloved series wrap up with the same humor, action, and over-the-top adventures that fans have come to love. These books feature bank robberies, epic battles, and even time travel, all while tackling deeper themes like how difficult it can be to make the right choices. The series’ trademark silliness shines through, and kids will be sad to see it end. The story builds on events from previous books, so it’s helpful to have read the earlier installments to fully appreciate the conclusion. The familiar comic panels and expressive illustrations keep the energy high, maintaining the visual style that has made the series so popular. This is a fantastic conclusion to a beloved series that will leave readers satisfied. VERDICT A must-have for any collection where the series has a strong following.
Blabey, Aaron. Cat on the Run in Cucumber Madness! illus. by Aaron Blabey. 192p. (Cat on the Run: Bk. 2). Scholastic. Aug. 2024. pap. $7.99. ISBN 9781339000923.
Gr 3-5–Princess Beautiful, a famous internet cat, finds herself entangled in international crime in this latest installment of the series. The story opens with Princess Beautiful tied to a chair alongside a goat named Marv, who claims to be a literal scapegoat. Marv knows she’s innocent and offers to help—if only she could trust him. Together, they must uncover who is framing her and what their true motives are. The plot leads to a world domination-themed cliff-hanger, ensuring readers will need the next graphic novel to find out what happens. The otherwise black-and-white illustrations are accented with red, drawing attention to the main character. Children will appreciate the playful tone of this mystery, especially if they have read the first book in the series. While the first half lags slightly, the story remains a quick read, and the ending will leave readers eager for more. VERDICT A solid addition where the series is already popular and graphic novels are in demand.

In this season’s four new books, the girls work together to prepare for a riding competition, care for a new mini horse in need of some extra attention, and experience other horse-related adventures. The short chapters and colorful illustrations make these books perfect for readers transitioning to chapter books, offering an engaging blend of story and visuals. After each story, readers will find discussion questions and horse facts, adding an educational layer to the fun. VERDICT This series is ideal for young horse lovers and those looking for exciting friendship-driven tales.
Carmona, Hannah. Fright at the Museum. ISBN 9781631638565.
––––. Operation Rescue the Animals!ISBN 9781631638640.
ea vol: illus. by Adriana Predoi. 48p. (Maria and Mateo Go on Field Trips). North Star/Jolly Fish. Jul. 2024. Tr $9.99.
Gr 2-4–In the latest installments of the “Maria and Mateo Go on Field Trips” series, the young protagonists continue their exciting adventures with trips to the zoo and a history museum. In the first story, Maria and Mateo, feeling sympathy for the zoo animals, attempt to free them by sneaking into the vet’s office, only to learn that the animals are kept safe to protect endangered species. This narrative provides an engaging, though perhaps over simplified explanation of conservation efforts. In the second story, they spend the night in a history museum alongside one of the largest land dinosaurs ever discovered. Their nervousness about sleeping near a “dangerous” creature leads to a meaningful lesson on shared anxieties and teamwork, as even their teacher admits to being scared. The colorful illustrations enhance the adventurous tone of the stories, and the inclusion of discussion questions, facts, and a Spanish glossary encourages further exploration of the topics. While the adventures are fun and educational, the decision to have children sneaking into restricted areas raises questions about the realism of the stories’ moral lessons. Nonetheless, these installments offer exciting, lesson-filled field trip experiences for young readers. VERDICT A secondary purchase for large libraries.
Chapman, Linda. Dream Shield. illus. by Kim Barnes. 160p. (Star Friends: Bk. 11). Tiger Tales. Sept. 2024. pap. $6.99. ISBN 9781664340800.
Gr 2-5–The Star Friends Mia, Lexi, Sita, and Violet, and their magical animal companions, are back for a new adventure. As the town gets ready for a scarecrow competition, a local developer stirs up discontent with his plan to build a new housing development on a beautiful cliff top overlooking the ocean. Even though the townspeople are against it, the developer refuses to reconsider. Meanwhile, the Star Friends and several other town members seem to have come down with a bug that is making them unusually sleepy. The girls become suspicious that it’s not an illness at all, but dark magic. With their animal companions, they must use their magical abilities to figure out who is behind the spell. With black-and-white illustrations peppered throughout and an interesting magical world complete with cute animals and a small-town setting, this story makes for a satisfying mystery. VERDICT Purchase for larger collections where the other ten books in the series circulate well.
Cole, Dave. Emily and Sam: The Mad Scientist Next Door. illus. by Matty Mitchell. 102p. (Emily and Sam: Bk. 2). Common Deer Pr. Sept. 2024. pap. $7.99. ISBN 9781988761961.
Gr 2-4–In the second installment of their chapter book series, twins Emily and Sam have a new neighbor who seems to be a mad scientist, and when neighborhood dogs begin disappearing, they suspect it’s more than just a coincidence. The neighbor’s lab coat is stained with red splotches that resemble blood, his garage windows are covered to prevent anyone from seeing inside, and he frequently receives mysterious deliveries. Applying the scientific method, the twins devise a plan to investigate the scientist and solve the mystery of the missing dogs. Working together, they discover that not everything is as it seems. After the investigation is complete, they learn that they can continuously refine their approach, improving upon the scientific method throughout their investigation. Though there are fewer illustrations than in a typical early chapter book, the cartoonlike images add vibrancy to the story. The simple, fast-paced text is accessible to newer readers and keeps them engaged from start to finish. VERDICT A compelling early mystery that would be a valuable addition to any collection.

Gr 3-5–This new series offers “seriously scary stories that chill to the bone.” Each standalone title is written by a different author, but all share the same introduction about I.M. Dead, “the master of misery who delights in dreaming up nightmarish tales.” In the first four novels, readers encounter the ghost of a legendary pirate haunting a surfer, a wish-granting mirror that traps someone in its nightmarish world, an evil egg controlling schoolchildren and making adults disappear, and a beast with red ears hunting for its next meal. Each story centers on a school-aged child going about their daily life before being plunged into a terrifying situation. Though the books are short chapter novels, there are no illustrations, and the content is intense, not for the faint of heart. The fast-paced plots are perfect for reading aloud as scary campfire stories. VERDICT A great addition to horror collections, especially where series like “Goosebumps” are popular.

Each title has three chapters, large print, and full-color illustrations on every spread. Young readers will delight in Ali’s earnest attempts to overcome whatever new challenge is thrown at him. An Urdu glossary is included at the start of each book, while additional supplemental information is appended. Examples include discussion questions, jokes, and more information about the book’s topic, such as Ali’s favorite foods and bug facts. VERDICT Recommended for purchase in most collections where kids’ beginning chapter books circulate frequently.

ea vol: illus. by Leo Trinidad. 24p. (Code Breakers). Cherry Blossom. Jul. 2024. Tr $30.64.
Gr 2-4–This series offers a fun and engaging introduction to code-breaking while weaving in a clever mystery. Each of the first eight books introduces concepts like short vowels, consonant blends, digraphs, word parts, and high-frequency words, making them an excellent choice for early readers looking to build their decoding skills. Max, Liz, and Chen, members of the Code Breaker’s Club, work together to solve mysteries, guided by the increasingly suspicious Miss Graph, the school librarian. With short chapters and simple vocabulary, the series is well-suited for children transitioning into chapter books, though the advanced nature of the code-breaking plot may be a bit challenging for the youngest readers. Different types of codes are presented, adding a layer of educational intrigue. While the structure works well for young audiences, longer chapters could have provided more depth, making fewer volumes necessary and appealing more to older elementary-aged readers. The series is still an entertaining and charming read, featuring cute black-and-white illustrations throughout, sure to spark an early love for puzzles and problem-solving. VERDICT A solid secondary purchase for large libraries that code breakers will enjoy.
George, Kallie. Anne Dreams: Inspired by Anne of Green Gables. illus. by Abigail Halpin. 72p. (Anne: Bk. 6). Tundra. Aug. 2024. Tr $12.99. ISBN 9780735272132.
Gr 1-4–In the sixth installment of the early chapter book series inspired by the classic novels, Anne purchases a bottle of hair dye in an attempt to rid herself of her bright red hair. The dye turns her hair green instead of black, forcing her to cut it short. This experience leads Anne to focus on self-acceptance, learning to value her inner qualities over her appearance. Through this self-reflection, she develops a new ambition: to become a teacher. Encouraged by her current teacher, she works diligently when recommended for Queen’s College. Adults will appreciate the homage to the classic series, while young readers will be captivated by Anne’s journey. The illustrations, crafted using graphite, watercolor, and colored pencils and completed digitally, add charm to the already engaging story. Although subtle references to a potential love interest may be missed by younger readers, they will still enjoy this delightful chapter book. VERDICT A fantastic addition to any collection, especially where illustrated chapter books are in demand.

Gr 1-3–Rufus and friends are back in this second book of the laugh-out-loud, full-color illustrated chapter book series centering around the Woofmore Hotel for dogs. When Silas Fang, a famous author of spooky books, comes to stay at the hotel, Rufus worries that he will be as scary as his books. When Mr. Fang arrives, however, he surprises Rufus by announcing that he came to the Woofmore to take a break from scary things. Relieved, Rufus sets about trying to make the hotel as welcoming and happy as possible. But the hotel has other plans! Bloody footprints (or is it ketchup?), screams of fear (or is it delight?) threaten to derail Rufus’s attempts to keep Mr. Fang happy. Can Rufus turn things around in time? Sweet and hilarious, this story will delight young readers who like a little spookiness in their stories. Rufus is a funny and sympathetic main character who toots when he’s nervous and doesn’t understand why anyone would want to be scared on purpose. Cleland’s endearing artwork enhances the high jinks and brings the characters to life. VERDICT Recommended for purchase in all collections.
Hale, Bruce. Grunthar’s Revenge. illus. by Luke Séguin-Magee. 160p. (Outer Space Mystery Pizza Club: Bk. 2). Penguin Workshop. Oct. 2024. pap. $7.99. ISBN 9780593660195.

Following their trip to the alien planet Kroon, Mateo, Tina, Booker, and their babysitter Jennica can’t stop thinking about the space portal in the woods and the alien friends they met on their adventure: NoWay and Clorox. Just when they consider visiting the portal again, NoWay and Clorox show up at their front door and report that Grunthar, the evil alien inventor, has come through the portal and is now loose in their town. Together the friends must find Grunthar before he can inflict too much damage. Hale is known for his wacky stories, and this one delivers. Séguin-Magee’s cartoon-style illustrations highlight the various alien life-forms and bring the pizza-fueled plot to life. VERDICT Recommended for collections where alien and science fiction stories are popular.

As she tries to manage the kitten, the Goat Avenger calls her to deal with an equally grumpy monster. The humorous parallels between the unruly kitten and the grouchy monster add a playful touch, and the introduction of a new sidekick for the Princess in Black enhances the fun. Despite his plan to be a future dark overlord, Ember is nervous about the trip because the island is supposedly haunted by a giant evil chipmunk, the Monster of Acorn Island. As the families and their pets settle in, a series of mischievous behavior carried out by the Monster gets blamed on the dogs, who must come up with a plan to defeat the chipmunk. The plan? Ember must find a way to become just as scary! This series is a crowd pleaser with its endearingly earnest animal characters and gentle misadventures. The two friends share the news with Jonah, a family friend who has just returned from traveling.
