First Second made a big announcement yesterday: They will publish The Nameless City, a new trilogy from writer and artist Faith Erin Hicks. Here’s the blurb:
An unlikely friendship forms between Nameless City native Rat, and Kai, whose country has recently conquered her city. The two of them must find common ground between their cultures and foil a sinister conspiracy. Hicks has created a beautiful and intricate world inspired by Central Asia and the Silk Road in which the besieged inhabitants of an ancient city are desperate to learn the secrets of the perished civilization which carved the city out of living rock.
The first volume of the trilogy will be out in 2016.
Hicks, who lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, started out making her own webcomics and gained a following for her graphic novels Zombies Calling and The War at Ellsmere, published by SLG, and Friends With Boys and Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong (based on the novel by Prudence Shen), from First Second. She is also the creator of The Adventures of Superhero Girl, a webcomic that has been collected in a print volume by Dark Horse.
In an interview with Bone creator Jeff Smith at Comic-Con International in San Diego last July, Hicks said she started making comics because she couldn’t find any she wanted to read. “I really liked the idea of comics, I was very attracted to the medium, but there were no comics being published that I felt wanted me as a reader,” she told Smith.
