American Girl Shelves Samantha Parkington

Say good-bye to Samantha Parkington, one of American Girl's original historical characters who was introduced in 1986. Samantha's complete product collection, including her best friend, Nellie, is about to be removed from American Girl's catalogue, Web site, and retail stores and placed in the American Girl Archives, says the company. But there's some good news for Samantha fans: the Samantha books will still be sold on Americangirl.com, at American Girl's retail stores, and at bookstores nationwide. Currently, there are 14 Samantha-related books in print, and the company will continue to sell the core Samantha six-book series and sideline titles. There are also plans to introduce two new Samantha titles in spring 2009, The Cry of the Loon: A Samantha Mystery and the interactive book, Samantha's World, says company spokeswoman Susan Jevens. American Girl doesn't reveal sales information, but Jevens says Samantha remains popular with today's girls. But as the company keeps growing, space for products in its catalogue and retail stores has become increasingly limited. "Given that Samantha has been around for 22 years, we felt the time was right to preserve her place in American Girl history, while making it possible to introduce new characters and products for our customers," Jevens says. To commemorate the impact of Samantha's 22-year existence, American Girl is inviting fans to share their favorite Samantha memories at Americangirl.com/stories. Visitors to the "Share Your Samantha Memories" site can post their Samantha stories and read tributes from other Samantha fans. Samantha is a girl of privilege living with her wealthy grandmother in 1904.
