Folio: recognized School Library Journal's work, with two Eddie Awards and an Ozzie Award honorable mention.
Folio: announced its annual Eddie and Ozzie awards, and School Library Journal (SLJ) was honored in several categories for B2B, Education publications.
SLJ won the Eddie Award for Series of Articles for the package of stories in the April 2019 issue that focused on how schools are incorporating social-emotional learning (SEL) approaches into libraries, classrooms, and school culture.
The cover story, "Teaching with Heart: How Social-Emotional Learning Transforms Students and Schools," by Drew Himmelstein focused on the role educators can play in SEL, which has been shown to better academic achievement. Other articles in the package included "Using Children’s Literature To Support SEL in the Elementary Classroom," "How To Read Mindfully: 7 Strategies for Elementary Students," "When Trauma Walks In: Creating Welcome Spaces by Recognizing Adverse Childhood Experiences," "More SEL, Less Discipline Boosted Graduation Rates in Atlanta for Black and Hispanic Students," "Mindful Storytimes: Fostering Calm and Focus," and an editorial by SLJ editorial director Rebecca T. Miller. SLJ built on the theme online via the April 17 publication of “Library Hacks: Apps and Websites To De-Stress in the Classroom.”
SLJ took home its second Eddie, this one in the Single Article category, for SLJ executive editor Kathy Ishizuka’s story "Can Diverse Books Save Us?", an analysis of the results from SLJ’s Diverse Books Survey.
The magazine received an Ozzie honorable mention in Cover Design for the March 2019 issue, “A Matter of Facts: Students Can Lead the Way on Climate Change” with a cover by Fabio Consoli.
SLJ’s sister magazine, Library Journal, was also recognized for its work. LJ won an Eddie in the Full Issue, B2B, Education category for its June 2018 issue, Leading Inside & Out. It also received honorable mentions in Series of Articles for "Reaching Net Zero: Library Design" and Single Article for LJ senior technology editor Matt Enis’s "Labs in the Library." LJ was named an Ozzie honorable mention in Photography for "Calgary Rises," with photos by Neil Zeller and George Webber.
