Louisiana's highest court vacated the court of appeals ruling in Jones' defamation case against Citizens for a New Louisiana, Michael Lunsford, and Ryan Thames. The case will now go back and be heard in the lower court.
Amanda Jones ended 2024 with a big legal victory.
After losing a judgment by the First Circuit Court of Appeals, the 2021 School Librarian of the Year and author of That Librarian took her defamation case against Citizens for a New Louisiana, Michael Lunsford, and Ryan Thames to the Supreme Court of the State of Louisiana. On Friday, December 27, the state's highest court vacated the court of appeal decision.
In a 4-2 decision, the Supreme Court directed the lower court to take up the case again. The First Circuit had said Jones's appeal was filed too late. As a result, the lawsuit never reached a stage at which evidence was given.
"We vacate the judgment of the court of appeal and remand the case for consideration of the entire appeal on the merits," the decision said.
Now the case will be heard in court.
In a statement given to Louisiana ABC affiliate, WBRZ, Jones said, "All I'm asking for is $1 and an apology. I believe in free speech, but free speech doesn't mean you get to make up lies about someone. I am looking forward to holding these men accountable for their malicious actions."
