Gr 2–4—In Patricia Reilly Giff's series for transitional independent readers, each short book features a different character from a group of friends who spend time at the Afternoon Center of their elementary school. In
Star Time (2011), Gina is anxious to be the star of the group's play. When the lead role goes to her friend, Gina realizes she can contribute, especially if she can help write the play. Charlie gets a buzz in his ear every time he concocts a new invention. Shoes that walk up walls aren't very successful in
Flying Feet (2011, both Wendy Lamb Books), but Charlie uses his creativity and individuality to put on a spectacular show for Character Day. Everette Plen energetically depicts Charlie, but the pace is so fast that it is difficult for students to read along. Becca Battoe gives a stellar performance as Gina, and gives the characters unique voices while maintaining the youthful spirit and humor of the story. The rapid pace of the narration may make the print versions a better choice..—
