Gr 3-6–Biccari, a sustainable finance expert, ambitiously attempts to teach financial literacy to young readers. The book begins with a graphic novel, where tween Nora and her grandma find a treasure chest filled with money. Nora is whisked off by Kiko, a mouse and expert in Treasure Management, who introduces the concepts of spend, save, and invest. Section two dives deeper into ideas of the necessity of money, value, spending, investing, saving, and donating. The last section explains the evolution of money throughout the world, who makes it, and possible financial futures. The author asks readers to use a global mindset while thinking about money; to consider the merits and labors of all people, such as a professional athlete or a nurse; and other big social-financial ideas. Lacolomb’s illustrations, which feature people of all ages and skin tones, help clarify harder topics, such as the value of labor or the concept of compound interest.
VERDICT Although this book occasionally slips into didactic territory, it is a clear, child-friendly explanation of how money works and the different ways it can create a better world.
