K-Gr 2—This series, recently translated into English, merges a one to 10 counting exercise with science lessons. In this particular selection, the human body is the subject. Bright primary colors and large text draw attention to each page. The visual repetition of the digits at the top of each spread not only highlights the progression of left-to-right movement but also reinforces the practice of counting from least to greatest. However, in trying to cover a range of concepts (skin, bones, muscles), the text does tend to overcomplicate itself. The vocabulary introduced is above both the reading and interest level of primary grade readers. Parents, librarians, or teachers may decide to read the book aloud as an introduction to a particular unit of study. But the constant shifting of focus from one subject to another will prove to be too challenging for the intended audience.
VERDICT A supplemental purchase for robust science collections.
