PreS-Gr 3–The trials and tribulations of a young girl experiencing a gamut of feelings, as Kris’s second-person narration defines emotions and how they may make us react. Throughout the story, the young girl finds herself in several situations that may be familiar to readers, such as feeling grumpy when they’re hungry, nervous when joining a new class, or happiness when making a new friend. Zivoin creates a story arc through the relationship of the girl, with light brown skin and dark brown hair, and her cat, with its foxlike tail keeping beat. The capturing of facial expressions cues readers until they may actually mirror what is happening on the page. A repetitive phrase, “You have feelings all the time,” warmly allows children to understand that emotions are natural.
VERDICT Kids will identify with the book and the message, which has story hour potential as well as a home on the SEL shelves.
