Gr 3–6—With her father in jail and her mother sleeping most of the day away, Charlie Reese is sent to live with relatives in the backwoods of North Carolina. Charlie is furious that her older sister, nearing high school graduation, is able to stay with a friend at home while Charlie has to stay with an aunt and uncle she does not know. Charlie is constantly looking for something to wish on—the first star at night, an eyelash, a penny found in the road—in the hope that her dream will finally come true. However, in her new home, she discovers kindness, true friendship from a boy named Howard, and love for a stray dog she calls Wishbone, and she realizes that her dreams have changed. Narrator Suzy Jackson does a lovely job capturing both Charlie's tough spirit and her deep desire to belong.
VERDICT Jackson provides unique and recognizable voices for Charlie and the supporting characters, making this audio production a truly enjoyable experience for most collections.
