K-Gr 3-Lovely digital artwork and sparse text depict animal migration in this oversize picture book. Twenty-five travels are covered in spreads, the content divided by water, air, and land, with a final nod to humans. The language and format match each animal. For instance, the section on the bar-headed geese states, "Up in the clouds, the air is thin and cold" as the text curves around the flying creatures. The words later jut up and down the mountains: "Look down! We can see the Himalayas!" The wildebeest entry is action-packed, filled with em dashes and exclamation points as they go "stumbling, rumbling, safety-in-numbering." However, this is more than just a handsome book. Some sections hint at a deeper message, such as the polar bears wondering if they can live in a warmer world. While each spread only contains a few sentences, back matter offers numbers and facts for readers hoping for more information.
VERDICT Better suited for enjoyable browsing than research. A fine addition to early nonfiction collections.-Elissa Cooper, Helen Plum Memorial Library, Lombard, IL
