PreS-K-The two bear pals from Geisel Award-winning You Are (Not) Small return for a fourth adventure with a surprise, new friend. It's fun being a pair, but when a new fuzzy animal asks to play, not everybody is excited. At first, the larger brown bear is enjoying tap-dancing alongside the blue, bunny-like creature, while the smaller, purple bear isn't exactly happy to share the brown bear. However, when purple bear realizes how much fun their new blue friend is, brown bear starts getting upset, declaring "WE ARE NOT FRIENDS." When purple bear agrees, "You are right. We are not friends. We are best friends," and that they both have a new friend, an important lesson in friendship and resilience is offered. The short, straightforward dialogue is done in large, black typeface, and the cartoon-like illustrations, rendered in ink and watercolor, leave plenty of white space, making this a perfect choice for early readers.
VERDICT Pair with Mo Willems's My New Friend is So Fun! for an accessible read-aloud on friendship. Recommended for picture book shelves.-Brianne Colombo, Fairfield Free Public Library, NJ
