Toddler-PreS–The latest volume of the “Vámonos” travel book series sets its sights on the Big Apple. Toddlers are introduced to some of the major monuments, such as the Statue of Liberty, and tourist attractions like the Brooklyn Bridge, that New York City has to offer. Each of the five boroughs is represented through illustrations and text. Readers visit Central Park and Washington Heights in the fall, see the tree in Rockefeller Center and attend the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop in Time Square in the winter, and eat pizza on Arthur Avenue and attend the U.S. Open in the warmer months. There is so much to see on these pages, including people of diverse backgrounds waving, seemingly at those reading this book, and small Easter eggs that observant little ones might find, such as the “Vámonos” series name as graffiti on the walls or publisher Lil’ Libros on a Times Square marquis. The busy, bright colors are inviting and joyous, much like the city this book celebrates. The rhyming narrative sometimes is a bit forced, in both English and Spanish, but not enough to distract from the text. More information on each site is included on the final pages.
VERDICT A great choice for families planning to travel to the city that never sleeps or for small denizens of New York itself.
