Gr 7 Up–A deep dive into current issues facing young adults and adults who identify as transgender and nonbinary. This volume also presents several personal stories from those who are transgender and nonbinary. Broken up into four chapters, the book tackles “Many Alternative Gender Identities,” where definitions and concepts are explained, such as the difference between sexual identity and gender identity. “Being Transgender” and “Being Nonbinary” go into the specifics of these gender identities paired with stories of people figuring out they were trans or nonbinary. Then the book finishes with a section on “Social Challenges of the Alternatively Gendered,” which discusses how different cultures have treated and referred to transgender and nonbinary individuals, such as in Indigenous nations and in Mexico. Current legislation that does not support transgender youth and bullying and other violence toward these groups is also covered with supporting facts and statistics and a call to action and empathy. The book also features source notes, a list of pertinent organizations, websites for further research, an index, and picture credits.
VERDICT A worthy purchase for reference collections seeking more up-to-date information and examples about gender identity.
