K-Gr 3–An eco-conscious series that not only presents basic facts about the creatures’ habitats but also shares how readers can keep their environments safe and hospitable. Stewart approaches perennial subjects of interest for kids in these Spanish-language editions of these books that were most recently reissued in English in 2015. Every spread profiles a species, presenting information about its habitat, common ways its home can be impacted for the worse, and what could be the result of that intrusion. A directive on what kids can do (or not do) to avoid the danger to the creatures' homes are also included. For example, in
Mariposas, readers will learn that some butterflies feed on the sweet sap of trees on the verso. The recto then advises children that if people make an effort to protect the forests, butterflies can grow and thrive. Sidebars provide cool facts about specific species, and each work has extensive back matter. The books have selected bibliographies and further reading. However, the resources are all from 2015 or earlier and in English. The websites are up to date. The acrylic art is a little old-fashioned but beautiful to pore over.
VERDICT These titles’ conservation message and actionable advice outweighs their slightly dated information and look. They will be welcome in most Spanish-language picture book nonfiction shelves.
