Gr 3–6—This debut by Benjamin, an experienced hairstylist, is a brief overview of hairstyles for elementary schoolers. Offering 30 different tutorials rated either "apprentice," "stylist," or "master stylist," the book is organized into five sections: "The Basics," "Beginner's Hair," "School Hair" (however, Benjamin doesn't explain what makes a particular hairdo appropriate for school), "Party Hair," and "Fun Hair." While many children will be able to accomplish these styles on their own, the majority will need a more experienced helper or another person to work on. Each entry features a supply list and step-by-step instructions with accompanying photos. Though the book includes a more diverse depiction of children compared with similar titles, the majority of the girls portrayed are white. The images make following the straightforward directions that much easier, and the volume is peppered with useful tips. There are enough activities to entice those new to braiding and those who want more of a challenge. Pair this selection with Sasha Coefield's DIY Braids: From Crowns to Fishtails, Easy, Step-by-Step Hair Braiding Instructions.
VERDICT A great addition to a school or public library where children or their caretakers are interested in learning how to style medium-length or long hair.
