18 months Up—This collection of 12 mostly well-known nursery rhymes and children's songs is in picture book format with an accompanying CD. Each song and rhyme appears on a two-page spread. Soft watercolor illustration in soothing colors feature children and animals engaged in play that reflect the rhymes. A white mouse visits and plays along on each page for an additional "find the mouse" game. In the book, the songs and rhymes are not given titles, although the first line of each offering is also the name of the song. Longer songs such as "The Wheels on the Bus" and "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" end after the first refrain in the book, but the full song is offered on the CD. The music is soothing or lively as is appropriate for the particular rhyme or song, and arranged in a similar musical style with both adults and children singing. Two or three rhymes may be less familiar to readers, so hearing the melody on the CD is a helpful option. A nice addition for public libraries.—
Terri Norstrom, Cook Memorial Public Library District, Libertyville ILEach of twelve spreads is devoted to a classic children's song or nursery rhyme, from the familiar (the title song) to the relatively obscure ("Swam Swam over the Sea"). The lush illustrations, featuring toddlers and animals enacting the lyrics, set the cozy mood, but collectively, the rhymes don't add up to more than the sum of their parts. A CD is included.
