Toddler-PreS–A winning combination of a Halloween truck theme and flaps encourages children to actively participate in learning the story. The book opens with friendly trucks on a construction site as the sun is setting, followed by illustrations of different trucks in simple Halloween costumes. For example, the cement mixer has three orange safety cones for a crown and a blue tutu. The recycling truck’s costume includes robotic arms. It reads, “I made my costume with
recycled things.” Young children learn vocabulary about trucks that shows the trucks’ different names, based on the jobs they do: a dump truck, recycle truck, cement mixer, digger, crane, steamroller, and monster truck are shown. The artwork is bright and colorful, and the text works well to convey the holiday theme without being scary. For instance, a blue dump truck has three horns and teeth. Text reads, “I carry loads of dirt both big and small.” The next page says, “Happy Halloween! I’m a Dump Truck! Tonight I’m a dino. Tomorrow I’ll
dump my haul.” This engaging story has a popular truck theme and provides new material for the Halloween holiday.
VERDICT A solid choice for public libraries, and also for schools serving preschoolers and kindergarteners.
