2–Every spread describes a type of transportation (plane, train, automobile) or a location where these vehicles congregate (airport, railway station, garage). The spreads are introduced with one or two simple sentences in a clean sans serif font. Words use European spellings, like “aeroplane” and “colour.” The text occasionally asks open-ended questions, asking readers to identify vehicles they’ve been in or what fun things can they do on a boat? Uncle Jim, a pilot, shows up on the last page with a present, an odd narrative choice. Cross-sections of vehicles are labeled with key parts and diagrams of locations are labeled as well. The artwork has a vintage Golden Book style charm (the book was originally published in 2012, updated here), not surprising since so many of Grée’s books were illustrated in the 1960s and 1970s in France.
VERDICT This book is packed with fun facts and charm; add to collections where Richard Scarry’s “Busy Town” or Raul the Third’s “¡Vamos!” series are popular.
