PreS-Gr 1—In a warm salute to the joyful curiosity of the very young, an elderly tiger is left to watch over an energetic small cub. Cub would rather run than walk slowly, and he carelessly chases butterflies as Tiger walks purposefully, planning to take a comfortable nap. Observant readers will note the constant movement of life in the jungle as a parade of jungle inhabitants gradually fill the page in a collage of digital art and watercolor. Backgrounds change from the colorless existence of a solitary Tiger to increasingly multihued images with entertaining Cub, and the eye is drawn to the vibrant orange of the big cats. While onomatopoeia introduces rhyming verse with each turn of the page, monkeys swing, rhinos stampede, and deer scatter in a book of movement and detail. Each page reveals increasing numbers of chameleons, butterflies, snakes, and birds in the foliage, transforming with color as a relationship grows between the eldest and youngest members of a group of tigers.
VERDICT A super storytime selection and a general purchase for libraries and classrooms.
