Gr 7 Up—A collection of ten bilingual vignettes, each one centered on an adolescent experience. The first half of the book is in English and the latter half contains the same content in Spanish. Teens across cultures will relate to the experiences shared in these stories. Each tale is a quick read, with details and plot points building quickly to the climax. Some of the protagonists are not as well developed as others; however, the real crux of each chapter is the conflict that the protagonist faces: love, loss, teenage pregnancy, illness, and being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Bertrand also includes discussion questions and ideas for how readers can develop their own narratives, which can be implemented as part of a creative writing curriculum or as writing exercises. The Spanish translations are also easily accessible, though not simplified in any regard. This volume of short stories should appeal to reluctant tween and teen readers.—Maricela Leon-Barrera, San Francisco Public Library
