PreS-Gr 2—This appealing adaptation of "The Mitten" is set in the Southwest. Rosa has a beautiful sunhat that's "red as rubies, soft as sand." On her way to school one morning, the wind blows it off her head and into the hot desert. The hat soon becomes a shelter for myriad creatures. First a mouse enjoys its shade. A heavy storm rolls in, driving a jackrabbit under its broad brim. The two animals are joined by a roadrunner, tortoise, family of quail, and, lastly, a fox. They all manage to squeeze in but soon the hat is once again aloft. Luckily for the child, the wind blows it right back onto her path, none the worse- but significantly larger-for wear (not that Rosa seems to mind). The paint and pencil illustrations are colorful and lively. A clever and fun addition.—
