K-Gr 4–History, both familiar and lesser known, combined with symbols of the St. Patrick’s Day holiday, are presented from A to Z. The book starts by encouraging readers to find the leprechauns hiding on the pages. Next, a brief history is presented: “Every March 17, all over the world, the people of Ireland, relatives, and friends join in a rousing celebration called St. Patrick’s Day. This holiday dates all the way back to 1631.” Then, the alphabet begins. Related terms (e.g., bodhran, the traditional Irish drum), traditions, and stories are explained in accessible language. Text is presented in different fonts, allowing the book to be read by younger readers as an alphabet book while looking for leprechauns. Older readers may enjoy learning a bit of information about the traditions and celebrations associated with St. Patrick’s Day, as well as an occasional joke. Each page features Celtic designs and playful illustrations in various shades of green, connoting all things Irish: from a New York City celebration to the Chicago River dyed green by the plumbers’ union since 1961, and, of course, the map of Ireland.
VERDICT While not an essential purchase, libraries may find this slim volume a welcome and useful addition.
