Gr 5–8—Kiranmala's life has always been rather ordinary in her New Jersey home; her father owns a shop, her mother is a homemaker. That all changed on the morning of her 12th birthday. She learns that her parents are now in another dimension, that the drooling, nasty, and quite hungry demon, a
rakkhosh, is as real as the two princes on flying horses who have come to save Kiranmala, revealing her true royal identity. The nonstop action is replete with cheerfully gross details (slime, snot, etc.) and dramatically read by the author. DasGupta also reads an afterword about the traditional tales that inspired the story.
VERDICT The combination of Indian-inspired fantasy with contemporary language and sensibilities is likely to appeal to young listeners.
