The Pilgrims

Gr 8 Up—With reenactments, expert interviews, and some stunning oceanic shots, this documentary fulfills its promise by explaining who the pilgrims were, why they were so desperate to leave England, and the hardships they faced en route to and upon arrival in the New World. Actor Roger Rees quotes Plymouth's long-term governor, William Bradford, using primary source material to great effect. Key elements are explained, such as the Mayflower Compact and the background of the first Thanksgiving. The documentary also describes the plague that wiped out much of the Wampanoag tribe. However, director Ric Burns makes some unfortunate decisions: the use of sustained, out-of-focus shots and shaky handheld camera footage. The DVD is an odd combination of remarkable aerial shots and extended scenes lacking visual interest. Narrator Oliver Platt's clear delivery enhances the production, though, displaying urgency during dangerous situations and compassion when there is tragedy. Several bonus features explore Puritan religious beliefs and the Native Americans near Plymouth.
