The Next Pandemic: What’s to Come?

Gr 7 Up–COVID-19 is still very much a daily occurrence, but what about the next pandemic virus? How will we work to protect from it? This volume breaks that question down into four components that explore how scientists are working to prepare for and mitigate the next virus. Four chapters (“Early Warning Signs,” “Testing and Treatment for the Next Pandemic,” “Creating Vaccines for the Future,” and “Viruses That Cross from Animals to Humans”) each discuss how mistakes in handling COVID-19 led to it become a deadly pandemic; Allen also considers how those mistakes are helping scientists potentially prevent another widespread disaster. The final chapter, though interesting and an important part of the conversation about viruses and bigger picture contributions to what could be the next COVID-19, feels unresolved and not as impactful as the previous chapters.
