PreS-Gr 2–Deenie is a Muslim girl, ready to try fasting for the annual holiday of Ramadan. By sharing her experience, she introduces readers to a tradition that goes way beyond the giving up of food. Deenie realizes that the monthlong observance offers an opportunity to try new things, to grow in new ways, and to find time and space for new people and old friends, like her mom’s lunch group that willingly and respectfully switches their usual lunch date to a museum get-together. Terms that may be unfamiliar are integrated into the story, and there is also a glossary in the back. Other random words stand out with enlarged font and in a variety of colors, making the text a bit busy in its appearance. Nonetheless, this cheerfully illustrated book is a welcome holiday offering for both Muslim children and any peers who may not know about the religion’s lovely traditions.
VERDICT An excellent addition to collections needing simply told stories about Islam.
