Gr 7 Up–In 1980s London, Susan Arkshaw has never met her dad. Switching frequently between being reliable and in a dreamy state, Susan’s mother hasn’t told her much about him. Susan’s only clues to her father’s identity lie in a small silver box her mom said was from her dad. While visiting a possible candidate, Susan’s life is interrupted by someone (or something) who tries to kidnap her and she is rescued by Merlin, a left-handed bookseller in search of his mother’s murderer. With the help of Merlin’s sister, Vivian, the team seeks the answer to both mysteries and Susan begins manifesting mysterious powers. Up against betrayal, dark magic, intrigue, and dangerous magical beings, the trio finds that they aren’t the the only ones who want to know who Susan’s father is. Narrator Marisa Calin brings Nix’s diverse cast of characters to life with her unique voices and engaging intonations. Her pacing works well with Nix’s unique narrative style. The world-building is complex and believable. The fast-paced, action-packed plot entrenches readers into Susan’s world. Characters are from all different ethnicities, races, and backgrounds.
