Gr 4–6—Award-winning children's performer Andy Z (Andreas Zamenes) gives us an old-fashioned audio play for kids ages 8 to 12 with music that is perfect for Halloween. Ten of the numbers are originals by Andy Z, ranging in styles from punk to hip-hop to Big Band Swing. The action of the play centers on Young Andy and his talking dog, Reggie, a Chihuahua with a St. Bernard's heart. Andy is excited to get his costume and participate in what he knows will be his last trick-or-treat, but before he can, he finds a lost magic wand and must find its owner, Sandy Witch, and return it to her. They are joined in their quest by Pleadia, a teenage alien, who exerts a mysterious power on Andy, and Andy's friend, Danger Dude, an English punk rocker The play, which has a radio-drama feel to it (some parents may be reminded of The Firesign Theater) teaches lessons about courage, self-sacrifice, and friendship. Among the songs are "Which Witch Is This?," "Punkin' Patch," "Alien Girlfriend," and "The Right Thing." The Broadway numbers may not go over as well as the hip-hop and punk songs. A good bet for that last hour of school when kids have maxed out on sugar and party activities.—Nina Sachs, Walker Memorial Library, Westbrook, ME
