The Good Stranger’s Sancocho Surprise/El sancocho sorpresa del buen desconocido

PreS-Gr 2–A Dominican retelling of the classic stone soup folktale. A Black man loses his wife and his children to an earthquake in the Dominican Republic. He has lost everything and must go begging for food, but no one will help him. The man encounters a little girl, who helps him make sancocho, a traditional stew, with stones. Others from the town come by and contribute as well. In the end, the town gathers to eat the meal, and everyone learns a lesson about unity and helping others. This bilingual tale provides a clear message about being kind to strangers and the importance of community. The illustrations are colorful and display the diversity in the town where the sancocho is being made. A sancocho-themed song in Spanish and English is provided in the back matter. There’s also a glossary for words that aren’t fully translated in the English text.
