Gr 8 Up–God-killer Rah, along with his warrior attendants Nuit and Geb, set out to restore peace to the lands of Kemet by killing cannibals, decimating mythical monsters, and conquering lands. Set in the Black Sands universe, which takes inspiration from Egyptian mythology and history, this high-octane comic follows the adventures of the first Pharaoh. Like Blade and John Wick, Rah is an unyielding badass who shows little compassion because his mission comes first. Each action sequence commits to this hardline quality through the dialogue; ripped character designs; sharply laid out, high-contrast compositions; and manga-influenced illustrations. This is especially true when Rah goes into “full cowl” mode. Hints of a deeper backstory and lore are sprinkled throughout; however, the first volume’s focus is on dashing from one battle to the next.
VERDICT An action-packed take on Egyptian mythology that will appeal to teens who like antiheroes.
