The Contract

Gr 3–7—Children may be well aware of Jeter's outstanding professional baseball career, but this story focuses on the total commitment and level of perseverance that were needed to realize his goals. Featured prominently are Derek's parents, who hold him to a high level of responsibility, through annual contracts that specify behavioral standards, including in academic performance and conduct in Little League. The Jeters, described as an interracial couple who have experienced their own trials, teach Derek by example to constructively respond to difficulties and focus on being a team player. Jesse Williams's narration allows listeners to easily visualize each figure and become thoroughly engaged in every scene. Although this story will instantly resonate with students who have participated in Little League, even students not involved or interested in athletics will be caught up in the realistic school and practice experiences as well as the stimulating baseball games.
