Gr 6–8—These series additions continue to underline the importance of primary source materials in researching and understanding history. Key concepts such as primary source, secondary source, and bias are defined in general terms. Each title goes on to explore these concepts in greater detail using a specific time period or event as an illustrative framework. In addition to the standard-issue captions, many illustrations are shown with one or both of these additional sidebars: "Evidence Record Card" and "Analyze This." The first lists the provenance of the illustration. The latter points out details and poses questions designed to encourage critical thinking.
VERDICT Those who serve middle grade readers and can afford only one series this year should make it this one.
