Gr 6 Up–This title provides an overview of common mental health issues, such as stress, self-esteem problems, and life transitions. Nardo discusses at length problems with home life, academic pressures, and relationship issues but deals only briefly with most clinical disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The author offers more information on body image and eating disorders in their own chapter but doesn’t provide support for readers experiencing symptoms of these disorders, and information about recovery is absent, aside from a vague suggestion to seek professional help. While written on a middle school level, the text is about teens rather than for them. Most books in the back matter are aimed at teens, but many of the internet resources are geared toward parents. Nardo also includes organizations that readers can contact for help.
VERDICT While suitable for general research about the mental health issues teens face, this is not a guide for those in need of assistance.
