Gr 2-3–Marvel’s iconic duo from the “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise test their storytelling skills in this high-stakes comic adventure. After narrowly escaping menacing blue monsters, Groot and Rocket find themselves trapped in an eerie forest, where their only chance of survival hinges on spinning a terrifying tale. With the fear of impending doom, Rocket tells the story of a Zombie dinner party gone wrong. It’s not enough to win their freedom. Groot, sticking to his signature “I am Groot,” continues with a tale of a termite-infested cabin. Still not enough. Rocket and Groot worry they won’t make it out in time to avoid a reunion with the creatures that are certainly right behind them. This fast-paced graphic novel unfolds across four concise chapters, each brimming with suspense and humor. The book’s vibrant illustrations are a standout feature. Bold colors and eye-catching panels capture the action and intensity of the oozing zombies and slimy blue monsters, while comical expressions add levity. However, the connection between the text and illustrations could be strengthened, especially in Groot’s segment, to ensure understanding. Readers will need to read carefully to notice that Groot is getting smaller and make the connection that this is due to termites, without any other visual clues as to why. For younger readers, text size is small and vocabulary will need support throughout. The complexity of the panel layouts also suggests experienced readers. Fans of these characters, however, will “Groot” for joy to see two of their favorite characters on the shelf.
VERDICT A solid addition where the franchise is popular.
