Gr 3-6–Squeak, Orni, and Castor of the Science Adventure Club are joined by Orni’s cousin Echid for a weekend camping trip by the shore. Echid is from Australia and loves talking about the ocean. Together the friends learn about the world ocean, the water cycle, ocean food chains and adaptations, and even a bit about the dangers of plastic litter. Comic-style illustrations in black and white use color sparingly to present types of bony saltwater fish, the inhabitants of a coral reef, and members of groups such as sharks, cetaceans, and crustaceans. Diagrams illustrate the cause of changing tides, the layers of the ocean, and the ocean floor. There are also introductions to famous ocean exploration vehicles and a page on Kathryn Sullivan, the first American woman to walk in space and reach the deepest point in the ocean. One spectacular spread has readers searching for animals with amazing camouflage skills. Another compares the Arctic Ocean in images across the top of the pages, and then readers flip the book upside down to see images of the Southern Ocean across the bottom. The book ends with a review of the different types of marine creatures shown throughout the pages and an answer key to the hidden and camouflaged creatures.
VERDICT Humor and detailed illustrations make this a great introduction to oceanography and marine biology for upper elementary and middle grade readers.
