Gr 3-6–
Splatoon returns to manga, this time with an adaptation of the third game in the popular Nintendo series. After falling asleep on a truck, Goggles is rescued by an inkling named Braid and discovers he accidentally traveled to the distant Splatlands. The turf-war style battles have spread here as well, though despite a reputation for being strong, Braid has never competed and she is anxious about it. Teaming up with a couple of newbies, they enter their first battle together, and silliness ensues. After pulling off a win, Goggles and Braid decide to remain a team, both to battle and to learn more about the Splatlands. New styles, weapons, stages, and characters make this series fresh for continuing readers, while the change in setting and introductions to characters ensure the series is accessible to those who are just getting into the world of Splatoon. While Hinodeya’s artwork is bold and slightly busy, it matches the overall tone. Consequently, the quick pace, body humor, and action make this a solid option for upper elementary students.
VERDICT This action-packed adventure is perfect for young manga fans. Purchase where Splatoon is popular or younger readers are begging for manga.
