Gr 4-6–Martin Ryan is a regular teenager, with two best friends, Tina and Enda, and two parents. They are a normal family, and lead a very normal life with normal jobs. Then they disappear and Martin and his friends discover that the Ryans aren’t what they seemed to be. Martin’s reality gets turned on its head as the three friends try to figure out where his parents have gone and why, and who else might be tangled up in this mystery. As Martin tries to unravel the lies he’s been told, he discovers truths about himself, his friends, and life on Earth as he knows it. Was Benny Doyle, space extraordinaire, right all along? Hearne does a fantastic job of setting readers up for the Turtle Flight of a lifetime as their understanding of the town of Glencooper and its inhabitants changes along with Martin’s. This fast-paced sci-fi adventure offers heartwarming moments of friendship and a healthy dose of fear and uncertainty along the way. It is a journey filled with excitement, suspense, danger, and superpowers, all wrapped up in a coming-of-age tale.
VERDICT Lovers of space and science fiction simply must have this one on their shelves and in their TBR.
