Smelling

K-Gr 2—Get ready to investigate your senses in this set about embracing the world through smell and taste. The format supports young readers with eye-catching photos, colorful font, and simple text limited to one to two sentences per page. Smelling explains how the olfactory sense mainly operates through the nose and how smell can be used to identify danger (smelling smoke). Tasting explores taste buds and the four principal flavors (sweet, sour, bitter, and salty), along with a warning about expired foods. Both titles begin with the same opening spread that defines what the five senses are. In each offering, an ending spread ("Super Senses!") gives an example of how an animal relies on that topic sense ("Butterflies use their antennae to smell with, just like our noses."). This set is a UK import; there are a fair amount of Briticisms throughout Tasting but none in Smelling. For example, in Tasting, Jones uses the term biscuits to mean cookies and the word gone off to mean gone bad. Gone off is listed in the accompanying glossary, so children do have the opportunity to look it up.
