Shattered Dreams

Gr 9 Up—Trinity Monsour is starting her junior year in a new school. All she wants is to make friends and be normal, but her sudden and unpredictable visions, typically of how people around her will die, make that a little difficult. When Trinity and a group of popular kids go to a supposedly haunted house for fun, she has a terrifying vision of the beautiful, popular, and vindictive Jessica as a prisoner in it. Several days later, when Jessica goes missing, Trinity continues to have visions of her pleading for help, but few people believe in the "dreams."' While the visions increase, Trinity also tries to piece together the mystery of her parents' deaths when she was a little girl and understand why she, her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother all had visions. From the first page to the last, readers will be pulled into this chilling story. However, portions of the plot are confusing and might require a second read-through. The teen's struggle with living a normal life while having these strange visions is interesting, but at times the complexity feels contrived. Despite a few structural flaws, the story will appeal to readers who enjoy books with a strong paranormal theme, infused with romance and suspense.—Elizabeth C.
