K-Gr 2–Karma Grant is a wannabe rapper and hip-hop artist in this easy reader based on the Netflix TV show
Karma’s World. Karma invites two friends, Sabiya and Switch, to make a singing group called the Go Girls. They soon ask another classmate, Demi Ray, to join after they hear her amazing voice. Karma believes she should be the star of the group since it was her idea, but when Demi Ray gets more praise and attention, Karma is jealous. Her mother gently imparts a wisdom to her disappointed daughter: “When you are in a group, you have to share the shine.” Karma apologizes to the girls, and the group patches things up and continues to work together to improve their performances. The Go Girls and their classmates are a diverse group of children, and the mix of longer sentences, advanced vocabulary, and colorful illustrations will be well received in the easy reading category. Two minor quibbles are the result of the computer-animated pictures taken from the TV series: First, the girls are dressed in the same outfits throughout, even though several days pass. Second, though the text states, “The Go Girls sing their hearts out,” some illustrations show the singers with their mouths closed.
VERDICT This easy reading story presents a good lesson with a satisfying conclusion.
